Black bins in Bristol will still be collected fortnightly in 2026 after councillors voted against moving to a three-weekly collection.
The Greens wanted the switch to try to boost recycling rates but Labour, Liberal Democrat and Conservative councillors opposed it.
Labour Councillor Kirsty Tait told a meeting in December that 71 per cent of residents did not want the change.“How can we justify pressing ahead with a model that the public clearly does not want?” she asked.
Bristol recycles the most of its rubbish compared to other large cities in England. But recently recycling rates have stagnated, and new laws coming in mean the council has to try and keep these rates driving up. By reducing the amount people put in their black bins, by collecting them less often, this would get them recycling more.
The council is now looking at other measures, including a nappy collection service and introducing better and larger recycling containers.
