The 91st Bristol Scouts had a sewing evening at which they made 21 wound drain bags for patients leaving hospital after breast cancer surgery. This was inspired by two group volunteers having had breast cancer earlier this year. One of these volunteers needed a drain bag and was told none were available as they were only donated occasionally by one lone person.
This sounded like a job for the scouts, so a call went out for help. 21 bags were made at that initial Scout meeting and a further 70 followed, made by Scouts, parents and even a neighbour of an ex-Scout!
The 91 bags were handed over to the team at the Breast Care Centre in June and the Group have already heard from one very grateful patient who was cheered up by receiving a scout-made bag.
In other news the Scouts have also been busy entering a contraption (with the Harbour Masters) in the Bristol Birdman competition plus camping, geocaching and building birdboxes. The Cubs have been sailing, learning to cook on fires, making bird feeders and extracting DNA from fruit! The Beavers have set off indoor fireworks, grown cress, navigated around St Andrews Park, and joined a district sleepover at AirHop.
The Group has a long waiting list and is always on the lookout for new adult volunteers to help us give these young people a fun and exciting experience whilst gaining skills for life.
