The boss of Bristol Waste was handed a payoff of nearly £120,000 to leave the company, on top of a £146,000 salary, it has been revealed.
Managing director Richard Williams left the city council-owned firm on March 2 this year after 17 months in charge.
He was the business’s fifth MD in less than four years in a round of revolving doors at the very highest level of the business.
The council’s annual draft accounts show Mr Williams was paid £146,106 in salary, fees and allowances from April 2025 up to his departure, plus £15,094 in employer pension contributions.
But he also got an additional £119,461 for ‘compensation of loss of office’ – essentially a golden handshake. This took his total package for 2025/26 to £280,661.
