A University of Bristol medical student signed his first full-time professional contract with Gloucestershire Cricket.
Kamran Dhariwal, a 21-year-old top-order batter, has earned a two-year deal with the county side after a breakthrough season which included a record-equalling 50 from just 13 balls in Gloucestershire’s thrilling Vitality Blast victory in July.
The contract follows a successful year-long rookie deal signed last summer and comes after Dhariwal made his senior Gloucestershire debut in May at the Seat Unique Stadium, Bristol.
The contract will allow Dhariwal to continue pursuing both his cricket career and medical studies, earning him the nickname “The Doc” among his Gloucestershire teammates.
Dhariwal, who starts the third year of his Medicine degree this month, said: “I couldn’t really do one without the other. I’d find it challenging to do just cricket on its own without that balance.
“Cricket teaches you resilience, which is just as important when studying medicine. Hospital settings can be stressful at times, so having the mindset to keep going and always strive to improve helps in both.”
“My current plan is to crack on with my studies, and the balance is quite nice at the moment. I’ve had massive support from the University, the Medical School and the Performance Sport team.
“I will continue to communicate with them as clearly and as early as possible to make sure to avoid any disruptions. Everyone has been brilliant in their understanding of the situation.”

Dhariwal grew up in Hampshire, where he first developed his love of cricket playing alongside his older brother under the guidance of their father, who coached the sport.
