More 20mph limits planned

Dozens more 20mph speed limits are being proposed in Bristol to try to reduce car accidents.

Among the roads under consideration are Kellaway Avenue,  Wellington Hill West and Gloucester Road / Filton Road from the existing 20mph area to near the border with South Gloucestershire.

Green Councillor Ed Plowden, chair of the transport and connectivity committee, said the proposals had been amended following public consultation. They were being considered by the committee after the Voice went to print and if agreed are likely to come in next year,

In England the default speed limit on street-lit roads is 30mph, which was set in 1934 after casualties from car accidents surged. Recently there has been a shift across the UK to 20mph speed limits, and Bristol rolled out these on many residential streets in 2010 and 2014.
